What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government program that provides funding and support to people with permanent and significant disability. Its goal is to give participants more choice and control over the supports they receive so they can pursue their goals, build skills, and live as independently as possible.

The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and is jointly funded by the Australian and state/territory governments.

The NDIS is for Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability that affects their ability to take part in everyday activities. This includes physical, intellectual, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disability.

Person-centred support means your supports are designed around you your goals, preferences, culture and routine. At Royalty Healthcare, that’s the foundation of every service we deliver: we listen first, then plan together.

To be eligible for the NDIS, you generally need to:

  • Be aged under 65 when you apply
  • Live in Australia and be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa
  • Have a permanent disability that significantly affects your daily life, or have early intervention needs

The full eligibility criteria are available on the NDIS website. We’re happy to talk through your situation if you’re unsure give us a call on 1800 467 692.

You can apply by calling the NDIA on 1800 800 110 and completing an Access Request, or by submitting an Access Request Form online. You’ll need to provide evidence of your disability from a treating health professional.

If you’d like help navigating the process, our team can connect you with experienced support coordinators. Get in touch and we’ll point you in the right direction.

The NDIA aims to make a decision on Access Requests within 21 days of receiving all the required information. Once approved, you’ll be invited to a planning meeting to develop your first NDIS plan.

If your application is unsuccessful, you have the right to request an internal review of the decision within 3 months. If you’re still not satisfied, you can escalate to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). Don’t be discouraged many people are approved on review with stronger supporting evidence.

NDIS funding can cover supports that are reasonable and necessary to help you reach your goals. Common categories include:

  • Daily personal activities (showering, cooking, dressing)
  • Supported accommodation (SIL, STA, respite)
  • Therapy services and allied health
  • Community participation and social activities
  • Assistive technology and home modifications
  • Transport and capacity-building supports

The NDIS does not fund supports covered by other government services (such as standard Medicare or hospital care) or everyday living costs.

These are the three ways your NDIS funding can be managed:

  • Self-Managed: You manage your own funding, choose any provider (registered or not), and pay invoices yourself.
  • Plan-Managed: A plan manager pays your providers, keeps the books, and gives you flexibility to use registered or unregistered providers.
  • NDIA-Managed: The NDIA pays your providers directly. You can only use NDIS-registered providers like Royalty Healthcare.

Most NDIS plans run for 12 months, with a review meeting before they expire to make sure your supports are still right for you. You can also request a review earlier if your circumstances change significantly for example, if your support needs increase.

Absolutely. The NDIS is built around choice and control. You can change providers at any time, and we’ll always respect your right to do so. If something isn’t working at Royalty Healthcare, we’d love the chance to fix it first but you’re never locked in.

We deliver NDIS services across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. If you’re in or close to these areas, we’d love to talk to you.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is ongoing support in your home with daily living tasks — it’s where you live full-time.

Short Term Accommodation (STA), also known as respite, is for short stays away from home, usually up to 14 days at a time. Great for when carers need a break or to trial more independent living.
